The Barr Brothers lug harp into the woods

You know you’re in for something special when a band brings a full sized harp and pump organ into the woods for an acoustic performance. For the session we recorded with them at Pickathon, The Barr Brothers decided not to compromise and hauled all their gear into the “Bunny Glade,” one of the festival’s dedicated jam stations, to play live in the middle of the woods. Not only that, they performed a couple of songs that they had been rarely playing live: the instrumental “origin” song “Sarah Through the Wall” (telling the story of Brian and Sarah’s first collaboration) and the beautiful “Held My Head.” It’s just this sort of unique experience that a festival like Pickathon brings out in artists, as you’ll see from the other sessions we posted early (see Part 1 and Part 2) and below. Watch as Laura Burhenn and the rest of The Mynabirds use sticks, cups and whatever else to create a rustic version of “Disarm” and as Marty Lund of The Cave Singers thumps a suitcase for a kick drum. You’ll also hear some new groups like Shovels & Rope, who is blowing up right now, and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, who are finally getting more attention in the U.S., plus Phosphorescent performing inside the Pendarvis farm house. What them all below and check out the full KEXP at Pickathon playlist of 23 videos here.
